Botswana's income tax is administered by the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) through a Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system. Botswana's system is notably simpler than most African countries: there is no national social security fund or mandatory pension contribution for private sector employees β income tax is the only mandatory payroll deduction for most workers. Effective 1 July 2026, a new top rate of 27.5% applies above BWP 400,000/year (up from 25%), under the Income Tax Act 2026. Even with this increase, Botswana remains one of the most competitive tax environments for employees in the SADC region.
This guide explains Botswana's 2026 income tax brackets in Botswana Pula (BWP), provides worked examples at multiple salary levels, and covers filing obligations for employers and employees. The BWP is Botswana's currency, not pegged to any single currency but managed against a basket; approximately USD 1 β BWP 13.5 (mid-2026).
The following rates apply to resident individual taxpayers in Botswana effective 1 July 2026, as administered by BURS under the Income Tax Act 2026 (assented 29 June 2026). Sources: KPMG and RSM Botswana tax alerts, July 2026.
| Annual Income (BWP) | Tax Rate |
|---|---|
| BWP 0 β 48,000 | 0% (tax-free) |
| BWP 48,001 β 84,000 | 5% |
| BWP 84,001 β 120,000 | 12.5% |
| BWP 120,001 β 156,000 | 18.75% |
| BWP 156,001 β 400,000 | 25% |
| Above BWP 400,000 | 27.5% |
Botswana's new top rate of 27.5% (effective 1 July 2026, up from 25%) is still notably low by African standards β compared to 30β45% for South Africa, 35% for Kenya, or 37% for Zambia. Non-resident individuals are taxed at a flat 25% from the first Pula of Botswana-sourced income, with no tax-free threshold. Bracket revisions are announced in Botswana's national budget, typically in February, for the July-starting tax year.
No social security or pension deductions apply for most private sector employees β only income tax is deducted under PAYE in Botswana. All figures in BWP (Botswana Pula).
Botswana's effective tax rates are among the lowest for employed workers in sub-Saharan Africa. Use the Botswana tax calculator for a personalised figure at your salary level.
