Ethiopia uses the Ethiopian Birr (ETB). It is the second most populous country in Africa with over 120 million people, and the largest landlocked country in the world. Addis Ababa is the seat of the African Union and a major diplomatic hub. Ethiopia has a fast-growing manufacturing sector, with global brands including H&M, Gap, and PVH sourcing production from industrial parks around Addis Ababa and the Hawassa Industrial Park. Tax is administered by the Ministry of Revenues (mor.gov.et). Ethiopia uses the Ethiopian calendar, and the fiscal year (EFY) runs 8 July to 7 July.
Moving from Ethiopia
Ethiopia attracts expat professionals in international development, diplomacy, NGOs, manufacturing, and IT. Addis Ababa has a well-established expat community given the AU presence and UN Economic Commission for Africa headquarters. Foreign nationals working in Ethiopia are taxed on Ethiopia-sourced income; employees of international organisations may have different tax treatment. The Ministry of Revenues (mor.gov.et) is the official body for tax matters. Cost of living in Addis Ababa is relatively low compared to other African capitals.
