Salary Guides
Tanzania uses the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). It is the largest economy in East Africa by GDP, with over 65 million people. Dar es Salaam is the commercial capital and largest city, while Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region with a major tourism economy. The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA at tra.go.tz) administers PAYE and issues the widely-searched TRA income tax calculator. Tax year runs 1 July to 30 June. NSSF contributions fund the national pension and social security system. Tanzania has significant natural resources including gold, natural gas, and gemstones.
Moving from Tanzania
Tanzania attracts expat professionals in mining, oil and gas, tourism, international development, and NGOs. Dar es Salaam has a well-established expat community with international schools and healthcare. Zanzibar has a separate revenue authority (ZRB) and some tax differences apply for businesses operating there. Foreign nationals are taxed on Tanzania-sourced income; residency rules apply after 183 days in a 12-month period. The TRA (Tanzania Revenue Authority) at tra.go.tz is the official body for all income tax matters.
