Salary Guides
Zambia uses the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW), which was rebased in 2013 (removing three zeros). The economy is heavily tied to copper mining — Zambia and the DRC together account for a major share of global copper output. The Lusaka Stock Exchange (LuSE) is growing. Zambia defaulted on its external debt in 2020 and completed an IMF-supported restructuring in 2023; the economy has been recovering with improved fiscal discipline. PAYE is deducted at source by employers and remitted monthly to ZRA.

Lusaka is Zambia's capital and primary commercial centre; the Copper Belt cities of Ndola and Kitwe are the industrial heartland. Expatriates working in mining, agriculture, and NGO sectors make up a significant portion of the formal workforce. Zambia has a relatively straightforward work permit process for skilled workers sponsored by employers. ZRA (Zambia Revenue Authority) administers all taxes; the self-assessment system applies to those with income outside PAYE. English is the official language, making Zambia accessible to international professionals.
