Mistakes happen: a missing form, a forgotten credit, a wrong amount. The IRS has a single form for fixing them, Form 1040-X, and clear rules about the time limit and what not to use it for.
This guide explains when to file, the time limit with an example, how long it takes and how to track it, and the penalty to avoid. It follows IRS Topic 308 and the Instructions for Form 1040-X.
Use Form 1040-X to correct a previously filed Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR, or to change amounts previously adjusted by the IRS. File a separate Form 1040-X for each tax year you are amending. Do not include interest or penalties on the form: they will be adjusted accordingly.
Do not file Form 1040-X if you are requesting only a refund of penalties and interest or an addition to tax that you have already paid, or to request your share of a joint overpayment that was offset against your spouse's past-due obligation. For a penalty refund the instructions point to Form 843; for an offset joint overpayment, Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation).
To claim a refund you must file Form 1040-X within 3 years (including extensions) after the date you filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you filed early, the return is considered filed on the due date (generally April 15).
| Example | Result |
|---|---|
| Original return filed April 15, 2026; tax paid with the return | Refund claim deadline: April 15, 2029 (3 years after filing), or 2 years after payment if that is later |
The 2 years from payment can run later than the 3 years from filing only when you paid the tax long after filing.
You should generally allow 8 to 12 weeks for your Form 1040-X to be processed, though in some cases processing could take up to 16 weeks. Processing an amended return remains a manual process. If you e-file your Form 1040-X you can select direct deposit (for tax year 2021 or later), which the IRS says provides a convenient and secure way to receive your refund faster. To track it, use the IRS Where's My Amended Return tool or call the toll-free number 866-464-2050 three weeks after you file; the instructions note it can take up to 3 weeks from mailing for a paper return to show up in the IRS system.
If you file Form 1040-X claiming a refund or credit for more than the correct amount, you may be subject to a penalty of 20% of the disallowed amount. Make sure each change is documented before you file.
If you are still working on the original return, see our 2027 filing deadline guide and extension guide. For income form corrections such as a wrong 1099, see our Form 1099-K guide.
