Waiting on an Indiana income tax refund mostly comes down to how the return was filed (electronic or paper) and whether it was held for a check. The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) publishes general processing times, an online status route through its INTIME portal, and short pages on the letters and debts that hold refunds back. This guide sets them out in one place.
Everything below comes from Indiana DOR pages read on 2 and 3 November 2026. DOR words its times as what a return "may" take, so treat them as ceilings the department describes, not promises. Our page cannot see your return; only DOR can tell you where your refund is.
Indiana DOR's Where's My Refund? page says to check the status of your refund on INTIME, the department's customer portal, or to call 317-232-2240 (option 3). It adds that you can message Customer Service on INTIME and that refund amounts from 2017 to the present may be available there.
If you are not registered, DOR's returned-checks page says to create an account at intime.dor.in.gov by selecting "New to INTIME? Sign up" and following the instructions. The official pages we read do not list what the refund-status screen asks you to enter, and INTIME could not be read without cookies and a login, so we do not say. Start from the link in the Official Sources list below.
DOR gives these general times:
In its individual income tax FAQ, DOR asks you to wait at least three to four weeks before contacting Customer Service about your refund. It also says DOR encourages electronic filing, online payment and direct deposit to significantly improve the accuracy and speed of the return and refund processes, and urges everyone to wait until they have all their official tax documents, because filing without all required information can delay a refund. DOR states the individual return is due April 15 following the end of the tax year, or the next business day if April 15 falls on a weekend or holiday.
This is our own date arithmetic on DOR's published ceilings, using an invented filing date of 1 February 2027. It is not a forecast of when you will be paid.
| Route | DOR time | Latest date if filed 1 Feb 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| E-filed | Up to three weeks | 22 Feb 2027 |
| E-filed, plus bank deposit time | Three weeks plus seven days | 1 Mar 2027 |
| Paper | Up to 12 weeks | 26 Apr 2027 |
The bank-deposit row adds DOR's seven days to the three weeks; DOR does not say how the two combine, so read it as our assumption. If a date passes with no refund, use INTIME rather than waiting for the calculation to be right.
Indiana DOR names these causes:
DOR says that if you get an ID Passcode Confirmation letter you must complete the steps to verify your identity before your return can be processed and the refund deposited. You have three attempts before the deadline in your letter, and after confirmation DOR says to allow up to three weeks to receive your refund. You need your Indiana return for the tax year named in the letter and the ID Passcode letter itself; for an ID DOR request you may also need your federal return, one residency document and one identity document, and the letter lists the accepted ones.
If the name or address at the top of the letter does not match the return you filed, DOR says to call 317-232-3425 (option 1), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET. If you received an ID Theft Victim letter, DOR says it means someone tried to file a return using your personal information, and the letter sets out next steps.
DOR says tax refunds can be diverted (offset) to pay a past-due Indiana tax liability or other outstanding debt held by another government agency or organization. Its common examples are:
The list is described as common offsets, not a full list. DOR says it may not have all the information, so you must contact the agency or organization responsible for the offset directly with questions. The pages we read do not describe the offset notice, so we do not either.
Injured spouse. On a joint return, a spouse who is not responsible for the other's debt can ask that their share not be used. DOR says to check the applicable box on Line 5, Schedule 7 (or answer the question in tax software). It stops processing and holds the return and any refund until the claim is processed, says it may still divert part of the refund, and says these claims can take several months to resolve.
DOR encourages direct deposit and electronic filing for speed, and notes that your bank may take seven days to deposit the refund. The pages we read do not say when DOR issues a paper check instead of a deposit, so we do not list reasons.
On returned checks, DOR says that if a refund check came back because of a bad address, the check will be reissued once your address is updated. To verify the address, log in to INTIME, choose the All Actions tab, find the Name & addresses tile and choose Manage names & addresses. If your account shows the correct address but the check was returned, message Customer Service on INTIME or call 317-232-2240 and press 2 to reach Customer Service about why it was returned.
DOR says amended returns can be filed up to three years after the original due date or the date the tax was paid, whichever is later, and that an amended return may result in a refund or tax due. DOR gives no processing time for amended returns on the pages we read, so we state none. By our arithmetic, a 2026 return due 15 April 2027 has a three-year window to 15 April 2030, assuming it was paid by the due date.
For tax years 2021 and forward, DOR says to file by clicking Amended on Form IT-40; for tax years 2020 and prior it points to Form IT-40X. You also file Form 1040-X with the IRS. DOR says do not amend to fix math errors, which it corrects automatically, and do not report refunds previously received on an amended filing. If the amended return shows more tax owed, it says to pay as soon as possible to avoid additional penalties and interest.
A practical order, using only routes DOR publishes: wait the three to four weeks it suggests for an e-filed return; check INTIME or call 317-232-2240 (option 3); look for a letter, which may be a request for information, an identity check or an offset; and confirm the mailing address on your account if a check was expected. Paper returns can take up to 12 weeks.
Is interest paid on late refunds, or what happens to a check that is never cashed? The Indiana DOR pages we read do not say, so we make no claim on either. Ask DOR through INTIME or by phone.
