Most people searching for a Georgia tax refund want one of two things: to check where their regular refund is, or to find out about the surplus refund the state passed in 2026. Both are handled by the Georgia Department of Revenue.
This guide explains how to check your status, what the DOR says about timing and when to call, and how the HB 1000 surplus tax refund works, using the department's own pages read on 26 October 2026.
The Georgia Department of Revenue says to gather your Social Security number and the expected amount of your return, and to allow at least 2 to 3 weeks of processing after submitting before you check the status. You can check online, use the automated telephone service at 877-423-6711 (select option 3, then option 3 again), or sign up for a Georgia Tax Center (GTC) account, which gives online access and can send a notification when a refund has been issued. The department notes that some returns take longer because of errors or incomplete information.
| Situation | DOR guidance |
|---|---|
| Status updated recently | Do not call: call center representatives have the same information as the Check my Refund Status application |
| Status has not changed in more than 6 weeks | Call 877-GADOR or 877-423-6711 |
| Status tells you to contact the Department | Call |
The DOR says its phone lines are typically busy at this time of year. Check the status first and call only if it falls under one of the situations above.
| Filing status | Maximum surplus refund |
|---|---|
| Single or married filing separate | $250 |
| Head of household | $375 |
| Married filing joint | $500 |
Governor Kemp signed HB 1000, the Surplus Tax Refund, into law on March 20, 2026, and the Department of Revenue has started issuing refunds to eligible taxpayers. The DOR says you may qualify if you filed your 2024 and 2025 Georgia individual income tax returns by April 15, 2025 (or by October 15, 2025 if you had an extension), had a tax liability for tax year 2024, and were a Georgia resident, part-year resident or nonresident. A DOR press release of May 4, 2026 adds that eligible filers must have paid into the system and not owe the Department of Revenue. The amount you receive depends on your filing status and tax liability, up to these maximums. To check, you need your SSN or ITIN and the federal adjusted gross income from your 2024 Georgia return (Form 500 line 16, or Form 500EZ line 4). Status updates are posted nightly, and refunds are issued based on the regular refund instructions on your return. The DOR asked taxpayers not to call until 6 to 8 weeks after the March 20 signing and says representatives only see the same information as the online checker.
The DOR says there is nothing a call center representative can add beyond what the online tool shows, so use the tool first.
